How to Make Sure Your Pet Gets Enough Daily Exercise

If you’re a busy pet owner, it can be hard to make sure your pet gets enough daily exercise. Exercise and attention can improve your pet’s physical and mental health, as well as curb unwanted behavioral issues. If you aren’t sure if your pet is getting enough exercise every day, consult with your veterinarian. Here are some tips for incorporating exercise with your pet into your daily routine.

Daily Walks or Runs

The best way to get your dog enough exercise every day is to take him on a daily walk or run. The amount of exercise your dog needs will depend on his age, weight, breed, size, temperament, and overall health. Smaller dogs need about 30 minutes of exercise per day, while larger breeds may need one to two hours.

For cats, their exercise requirements also depend on the same factors outlined for dogs. Most cats need between 30 minutes and an hour of exercise or play time each day. If your cat will tolerate a leash, you can take him for a short walk each day. Otherwise, you can give him supervised play time in a fenced yard, or consider installing an exercise wheel in your home.

Play Dates or Visiting the Dog Park

Another great way to get a cat or dog some exercise is to arrange a play day with a friend’s pet. Make sure it is an animal that you and your pet have interacted with successfully before, and that it is one that has a similar temperament or energy level as your pet. If you have a dog, you could also take your dog to your local dog park for play.

Interactive Toys and Games

Both dogs and cats benefit from interactive toys and games that offer physical and mental stimulation. Interactive feeders or food or treat puzzles are a great way to get your pet some extra activity each day. You can also play fetch, play with a wand toy, or try out a battery-operated toy that your pet can chase.

Call your veterinarian today to make an appointment to discuss your pet’s daily activity level and overall health.
