After almost 40 years of practicing veterinary medicine, I will finally be hanging up my stethoscope at the end of this year. My mind thinks young, but my body keeps reminding me of how old I am. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to be your veterinarian and to be able to provide service to you and your pets for all of these years. One of our guiding principles has always been that medicine should be practiced as a form of friendship. I have so many fond memories of friends, animals, families, doctors, and staff. I am a very lucky man and know I have been truly blessed.
I believe Plymouth Heights has been one of the best small animal clinics in the Twin Cities especially with the staff we have in place; they will remain so long after my departure. I have been slowly weaning myself away from my duties over the last couple of years and feel everyone is prepared as they can be for this change.
So many of my clients have asked me which doctor should they see in the future. I want everyone to know all of my doctors are great. I may have more experience, but they are all smarter than I am. We chose them because of their intelligence and their compassion, and they have all proven themselves worthy of being part of our family. I value all of their opinions. The great part about working at a multi-doctor clinic is the collaborations we share in dealing with difficult cases. That ensures the best care for your animals. Of course, our personalities are different as all people are, but try any one of them, and I think you will be pleased. I will keep using them as my veterinarians in the future and will always be comfortable with any doctor who is available on any given day.
I now look forward to retirement. My recent knee "revision" went well and I look forward to a pain-free future. As many of you know, I also volunteer multiple days a week at the Raptor Center which has become my new passion and one that will keep me busy in the coming years. My wife, Sue, and I have also purchased a new (old) home in Golden Valley that will require extensive remodeling, and we have a new grandson coming in January and look forward to providing some daycare for him. So don't worry about me being bored in retirement!
There will be no party or celebration for me. I could not handle that emotionally. Saying goodbye to clients over these last couple months have been difficult enough and just thinking about saying goodbye to such a loyal and able staff, who are my family, gets me close to tears. There's an old favorite James Taylor song that came out the year I started veterinary school (1974!) called "Fading Away," and that's how I would like to leave. So thank you all for your support, your loyalty, and your friendship through all of these years. I will never forget you and will remain forever grateful.
